How to Transition Your Modest Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

The jump from late summer to early fall is the trickiest time in any wardrobe, and a modest one is no different. The pieces you wore through August are still good — they just need a few swaps to carry you into cooler mornings and evenings without a full reset.

This guide covers the small changes that do the heavy lifting: fabric weight, layer order, and colour, so your hijab-and-abaya looks stay comfortable as the temperature drops.

Keep the abaya, change what is underneath

Your open abaya does not need to change with the season. What goes under it does. In summer the inner slip or dress does the cooling work; in fall, swap to a long-sleeve knit or a trouser-and-top set so the abaya becomes the top layer over something with more weight.

A fluid open maxi such as our teal blue four-way stretch open-front maxi abaya carries both seasons because the stretch fabric works over a light slip in warm weather and over a knit when it cools.

Layer order that actually holds up

The mistake most people make in transitional weather is one thick layer instead of two thin ones. Two thin layers — a fine knit plus the abaya — let you adjust through a day that starts cold and ends mild. A mesh cardigan abaya set is built for exactly this: the mesh adds warmth and interest while staying light.

Fabric weight, not fabric type

You do not need different fibres for fall. You need more of them, in the right order:

  • Viscose and tencel — still your best base; they breathe and drape, and a double-layer tencel knit abaya dress reads as substantial without bulk.
  • Crepe and nida blends — matte and stable, they suit cooler days and resist creasing through a long one.
  • Jersey knits — the easiest mid-layer; choose a tonal shade so the outfit stays clean.

Colour that moves with the season

Summer brights can feel out of step by October. You do not have to abandon colour — just shift it. Move from high-saturation prints toward deeper, grounded tones: ink, stone, deep teal, camel. These pair with almost any scarf and photograph well in flatter autumn light.

For the headscarf, a textured chiffon such as our keffiyeh chiffon hijab holds its shape on windier days, while a printed piece like the watercolor floral hijab keeps a touch of summer colour without clashing with autumn layers.

A simple capsule for the in-between weeks

If you want one small set to cover the transition, anchor it on:

  • One open abaya in a neutral (ink, stone or deep teal)
  • Two inner layers: a long-sleeve knit and a wide-leg trouser set
  • Two scarves: one textured neutral, one quiet print
  • One closed piece for cold mornings, such as a viscose two-piece abaya set

That is four pieces plus a scarf, and it covers most of the in-between weeks without a wardrobe overhaul.

Care that protects the drape

Fall means more layers in the wash rotation. Air dry knits and abayas flat or hanging; tumble heat breaks the drape and shortens the life of the fabric. If you are still choosing fabrics, our hijab fabric guide compares chiffon, jersey, cotton and polyester by grip and weight, and our open-abaya styling guide shows how one abaya becomes several looks.

Start with one swap

You do not need to rebuild anything. Change the inner layer, add one knit, shift the scarf tone — and the same abaya carries you into fall. See what is newest in New Arrivals, or browse Hijabs & Khimars for the season's scarves.
