How to Care for Your Abaya and Hijab: A Simple Care Guide
Share
A well-made abaya or hijab is an investment in your everyday wardrobe, and a little routine care keeps the fabric flowing and the color true for years. This plain-language guide covers washing, drying, storing, and travelling with the most common modest-fashion fabrics.
1. Read the fabric first
What the piece is made from decides everything else. Chiffon and viscose are light and airy but delicate. Cotton and jersey are sturdy and easy. Nida and crepe hold a clean, structured line and resist wrinkles better than pure chiffon. Match your method to the fabric, not the color.
2. Washing without damage
- Hand wash or gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and harsh stain removers — they weaken delicate weaves.
- Turn pieces inside out before washing to protect embroidery, lace, and printed surfaces.
- Wash similar colors together. Deep tones like navy, emerald, and maroon can release dye on the first wash.
3. Drying the right way
Skip the tumble dryer for chiffon and viscose — heat sets wrinkles and shortens the life of the fabric. Hang pieces on a padded hanger or lay them flat to dry, away from direct sunlight so colors stay rich. A breezy shaded spot is ideal.
4. Keeping them wrinkle-free
If a piece creases, use a low-heat iron with steam and press on the reverse side, or hang it in a steamy bathroom to relax the folds. For travel, fold along the original seams with acid-free tissue inside the folds to prevent hard creases.
5. Smart storage
Use padded hangers for open-front and structured abayas so the shoulders keep their shape. Closed styles and delicate hijabs do well in breathable garment bags away from humidity. Avoid wire hangers, which leave permanent marks on soft fabrics.

Frequently asked questions
Can I machine wash my abaya?
Yes, if the fabric is polyester, jersey or a cotton blend — use a cold, delicate cycle with like colours. Chiffon, silk blends and anything with lace or embroidery should be hand washed.
What temperature should I wash at?
Cold for chiffon, jersey and polyester, and cool up to 30°C for cotton blends. Heat causes shrinkage in cotton and can set permanent creases in synthetics.
Can I tumble dry my hijab?
No. Tumble drying shrinks cotton, stretches jersey and can gloss or melt polyester. Air dry everything instead — flat for jersey and chiffon, hanging in shade for polyester.
How do I store scarves so they keep their shape?
Folded rather than on a hanger. Hanging stretches the knit, and folding a print under heavy weight can leave a crease that takes several washes to soften.
