How to Keep Your Hijab From Slipping: 7 Fixes That Actually Work

You wrapped it perfectly at 8am. By lunchtime the front has crept backwards, one side is shorter than the other, and you are re-tucking in a bathroom mirror. A slipping scarf is almost never a skill problem — it is usually a grip, weight or balance problem. Fix those three and the wrap holds itself.

1. Start with the layer nobody sees

Most slipping starts underneath. Hair is smooth, scarves are smooth, and smooth on smooth moves. A fitted cotton under-cap gives the outer fabric something to hold onto, and it stops your hairline from pushing the scarf backwards through the day.

Cotton is the one to look for — it breathes, it grips, and it does not slide the way satin-lined caps can. Ours are one size with a soft stretch band, so nothing digs in behind the ears.

2. Match the fabric to the day, not just the outfit

Fabric decides how much work you have to do. As a rough rule:

  • Jersey — the most forgiving. Natural stretch and cling mean it stays where you put it with the fewest pins. Best for long days, commuting and school runs.
  • Printed satin and polyester shawls — the most beautiful drape, the least grip. Gorgeous for events and photos, but they want an under-cap and one or two well-placed pins.
  • Textured or crinkled weaves — middle ground. The texture itself creates friction.

If your scarf slides all day and you are wearing smooth satin every single day, that is your answer. Keep satin for occasions and let jersey carry the weekdays.

3. Stop fighting the long side

Uneven wraps slip because gravity is pulling harder on one side. If your left side is twice as long as your right, that weight drags the whole wrap backwards over a few hours. Either even the sides out, or secure the long side properly at the shoulder instead of letting it hang loose.

4. Pin the structure, not the fabric

A pin that only catches the outer scarf will tear or slide. Pin through the under-cap so it anchors to something already fixed in place. Two real anchor points do more than five decorative ones:

  • One at the temple, just above the ear, to lock the front line.
  • One under the chin or at the shoulder, to hold the drape.

Everything else is styling.

5. Check coverage while moving, not standing still

A wrap that looks perfect in the mirror can fail the second you look down at your phone or reach up for something on a shelf. Before you leave, bow your head, turn side to side, and lift both arms. If the front collapses or the chest coverage opens, adjust now rather than at 2pm.

6. Diagnose one problem at a time

When a wrap keeps failing, changing everything at once teaches you nothing. Name the exact failure first:

  • Sliding backwards → under-cap or hair placement.
  • Front collapsing → fabric too soft, or the fold is too loose.
  • One side shortening → uneven starting point, or an unsecured long side.
  • Tight by afternoon → too many layers around the neck, not the outer fabric.

Change one variable for a few wears. When it improves, you have learned something you can repeat.

7. Build a small, reliable rotation

A drawer with thirty scarves is not a wardrobe if only four of them behave. Keep the ones that hold: two neutral jerseys for weekdays, one or two printed shawls for occasions, and a couple of under-caps in colours that disappear under everything. That is a system you can get dressed from in two minutes.

Lengths and weights differ between our jersey scarves, printed shawls and caps, so check the measurements listed on each product page to know exactly what drape you are getting.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my hijab slip more in the wind?
Chiffon and silk blends have very little natural friction, so a gust lifts the edge away from the head. The fixes that help most are adding a layer underneath and switching to a fabric that grips.

Does an undercap stop a chiffon hijab from slipping?
Yes, it helps a lot. Chiffon over a cotton under-cap holds its position far better than chiffon over hair, because the cotton surface gives the scarf something to grip.

Is jersey better than chiffon for staying in place?
For daily wear, yes. Jersey is a knit, so it grips hair and stays put without pins. Chiffon is the better choice for occasions, where you want the drape and will adjust it by hand.

How do I pin a hijab so it does not show?
Tuck the pin end under the fold of fabric at the side of your neck rather than pushing it through the top layer. The pin then disappears into the fold instead of sitting visibly on the scarf.
